Presented to the New York City Police Benevolent Association (NYCPBA)
I paint Hero Paintings for American and foreign veterans, freedom fighters and heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic. I painted Blue Lines Matter as a tribute to law enforcement officers, their families and staff of police departments nationwide. It is dedicated to the members of the New York City Police Department.
Blue Lines Matter is a bold abstract representation of an American flag, hung vertically with a Betsey Ross star arrangement in iridescent pearl straddling the star field and the nine stripes of the flag. The flag colors are black / dark gray, white and single blue stripe representing law enforcement, all with streaks of iridescent gold. I painted Blue Lines Matter entirely with palette knives.
A total of twelve rosettes of Gold Mica Flake (Large) are painted on the four sides of the painting as a special tribute to:
- the law enforcement officers of the New York City Police Department
- the families of law enforcement officers of the New York City Police Department
- the civilian staff and volunteers of the New York City Police Department
- the citizens of New York City

Kim Hee Baek – Korean Independence Hero “Guarded by her people, ever may Korea stand.”

It was my honor to paint this Hero Painting for Kim Hee Baek, my wife Kija’s uncle, a true Korean Hero and a Freedom Fighter in the battle against the Japanese occupation of Korea. He was born on October 17, 1899 in Daedong, Pyongan Nam-do, Korea, near Pyongyang, North Korea, and died in November 1937 in exile in Manchuria.
Kija has told me many stories about her uncle, a true hero of Korean independence, and it is my honor to present her with this Hero Painting on behalf of her uncle. He was imprisoned for over 5 years and eventually gave his life for his country. He never lived to see a free Korea but made great contributions to founding a new country, the Republic of Korea, much like the patriots of the American revolution 144 years prior.
For his efforts, hero Kim Hee Baek was posthumously awarded national medals by two South Korean presidents: the Order of Merit for National Foundation which was bestowed in 1977 by South Korean President Park Chung-hee, and the National Patriotic Medal in 1990 by South Korean President Roh Tae-woo.
The painting is an abstract representation of the flag of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in exile from 1919 – 1948, and the flag under which Kim Hee Baek fought for independence. He gave his life for the independence of Korea from the brutality of the Japanese who enslaved, tortured and murdered the Korean people from 1910 – 1945. This flag meant everything to him.

“Code of Conduct”
The Code of Conduct provides guidance for the behavior and actions of members of the Armed Forces of the United States. This guidance applies not only on the battlefield, but also in the event that the service member is captured and becomes a prisoner of war.
It was my great honor to paint “Code of Conduct” for Captain Wayne O. Smith, USAF, a brave man and highly decorated American hero.
The painting is an abstract representation of an American flag, with a Betsy Ross constellation. Along the edges are sixteen (16) medallions of gold mica representing Captain Smith’s 16 years of service in the Air Force. Seven of the medallions are larger than the others: two represent Captain Smith’s two Silver Stars, while the other five large medallions represent each of his five plus years of imprisonment in North Vietnam.

Bold, freestyle streaks of Naphthol Red Light represent the red stripes of a traditional United States flag. Mike wanted an abstract, so here it is.

The Painting
The painting is an abstract representation of the national flag of Mali which is accented with horizontal streaks of Iridescent Gold Deep (Fine), and a special overlay of the 50 stars of the American flag to represent Lamine’s two homelands. The four sides of the painting are accented with small gold mica and each side is marked with special medallions of large gold mica: one for his birthplace, Mali; one for his birth continent, Africa; one for his adopted country of America; and one for our special brotherhood.

It was my honor to paint “The Emblem of the Brave and True” in honor of all United States military veterans of the Quail West community.
The painting is an abstract representation of an American flag, with a 50-star constellation. Along the edges are fifty (50) medallions of gold mica representing all of our Quail West veterans. Since no one knows exactly how many veterans live here at Quail West, I painted as many medallions on the sides of the painting as I could, and it happened that 50 fit perfectly! So, pick a medallion and it will be yours.

It was my honor to paint this Hero Painting for my nephew, Dr. Matt Boylan and his wife, Dr. Meredith Senter, true American heroes. Their extraordinary bravery during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. This painting honors U.S. Army Ranger Captain Justin Cope for his military service to the United States of America.
The painting is a bold abstract representation of diagonal red, white and blue stripes with overlays of Interference Red painted on the blue stripes, Interference Blue painted on the red stripes and Interference Gold (Fine) painted on all stripes and sides. A star field of fifty stars is painted in Iridescent Pearl is overlaid on the painted stripes.
Each of the four panted sides of the work include three rosettes of Gold Mica Flake (Small) with the exception of the left side panel of the painting which is a representation of Captain Cope’s formal Captain’s Bars, painted in Iridescent Silver, replacing one rosette.

It was my honor to paint this work for four American heroes.
This painting honors Bob Lowe (US Air Force), Julie Lowe, Chad Lowe (US Army) and Teddy Lowe (US Army) for their individual and collective extraordinary service to the United States of America, its armed forces and our great veterans.
The painting is a representation of a portion of an American flag with red and white stripes overlaid with streaks of blue and a star field of fifty stars painted in Iridescent Pearl. A large, discernable single star in outline form is shown in the right-center of the work. Four stars within this large star are over-painted in the format of a family tree: Bob and Julie Lowe are signified with gold stars, while Chad and Teddy Lowe are represented by silver stars directly below the gold stars. Plenty of other stars for more family heroes to be recognized!

We owe much to our hero airmen who stand ready to deploy in an instant into hot wars on orders of their Commander in Chief. Josh’s unit, the 34th AMU, kicked off Operation Iraqi Freedom with the largest precision guided bomb strike in history, when four B-1s delivered 96 GBU-31 2,000 lb JDAMs (Joint Direct Attack Munitions). Ready Always!
